Lower Kalimna Falls

Lower Kalimna Falls is a single-drop waterfall on Kalimna Creek near Lorne. Its undercut rock ledge forms a cave-like recess where, when access is safe, you can look through the falling water toward the pool. That unusual behind-the-cascade view is the reason to make the forest walk.

The route starts at Sheoak Picnic Ground, reached from Lorne via Allenvale Road. Lower-only estimates are about 6.25 km for a circuit or 6.5 km return, taking around 2.5 hours. The official park guide's 8 km, 3-hour difficult grade describes a combined walk to both Lower and Upper Kalimna Falls, so check which route you mean before setting out. The creekside track can be muddy and slippery after rain.

Sheoak is a picnic and walking hub. Local walking notes list toilets, picnic tables and gas barbecues there; potable water wasn't confirmed. Dogs aren't allowed on park roads, tracks or trails. No food business at the falls was found.

The approach follows part of an old timber tramway corridor. From the 1890s until logging stopped in the 1920s, timber from this area was taken to Lorne Pier. Historical markers along the walk explain that working landscape, and a few large old trees survived among the younger regrowth.

The creek can carry more water after rain, while visitor reports describe less flow in dry or summer conditions. Rain also leaves the track muddy and slick, so the best-looking cascade can come with slower, more careful walking.

Tall eucalypts, tree ferns, ferns and wattles line the creekside route. Local walking notes list calls of white-throated treecreepers, grey shrikethrushes and eastern yellow robins, and note seasonal flowers and fungi on logs and trunks.
