Lower Kalimna Falls

Overview

Lower Kalimna Falls is the Otways at their best: a fern-draped amphitheater where a thin veil of water spills over a rock ledge and you can actually walk behind the curtain. It’s a short, mostly flat forest wander from Sheoak Picnic Area, and it feels wonderfully tucked away once you reach the grotto.

What You’ll See

• A broad rock recess behind the falls—perfect for sheltering under the spray and framing moody photos.
• A shallow, rocky pool (too shallow for swimming) ringed by tree ferns and mossy walls.
• Sheoak Creek alongside the track, with smaller cascades and plenty of damp, rainforest vibes.

Trail Basics

• Start/parking: Sheoak Picnic Area near Lorne.
• Facilities at trailhead: toilets, picnic tables and a shelter; none at the falls.
• Distance/time: about 5.6–6.5 km return; allow 1.5–2.5 hours at an easy pace.
• Track character: mostly gentle grades with occasional muddy, slippery sections after rain.
• Road in: includes some unsealed surface but generally fine for 2WD when conditions are normal.

A Note on Access (as of November 26, 2025)

Lower Kalimna Falls is open via the Kalimna Falls Walking Track from Sheoak Picnic Area. The Kalimna Tramline link walk and Upper Kalimna Falls remain closed until further notice. Check Parks Victoria for any changes before you go.

History & Sense of Place

Much of the route follows the corridor of an old timber tramway—reminders of the Otways’ logging era—before delivering you to a naturally undercut falls that feels like a pocket cave.

Wildlife

Look for telltale diggings from echidnas and long-nosed bandicoots along the track, and expect birds flitting through the creekside forest. Snakes are possible in warmer months—watch your step.

Best Time to Visit

• After rain is when the falls look their best, but that’s also when the trail is muddiest—wear proper boots.
• For calmer vibes and softer light on the falls, aim for early morning or after 3 pm.
• Weekends can see more foot traffic; weekdays are usually quieter.

Know Before You Go

• No dogs, drones (without a permit), fires, bikes or vehicles on the track.
• Surfaces can be slippery and uneven; take care around the pool and rock ledges.
• Mobile reception is limited—download maps and info in town.
• The pool is shallow and rocky; it’s not a swimming spot.
