Trail guide
This is the full 9 km loop from Sheoak Picnic Ground, taking about 3½ hours. It follows Sheoak Creek to Swallow Cave and Sheoak Falls, then climbs out of the valley to Castle Rock lookout before returning to the picnic ground. This is the creek-side circuit, not the much shorter Sheoak Falls walk from the Great Ocean Road. Expect a moderate-to-difficult day walk, with steep climbs and steps. Leave time for the cave and lookout spurs rather than rushing the loop.
The lower route stays close to the creek through regrowth forest and woodland, with four bridge crossings, mossy rocks and fern-lined banks. About 2.5 km in, follow the short signed spur to Swallow Cave and Sheoak Cascades, then retrace it to the main track. The cave’s honeycombed rock face is used by nesting swallows, most likely to be seen from spring through autumn. The path then crosses the creek and climbs before dropping down wooden steps to the Sheoak Falls viewing platform.
From the falls, the circuit climbs away from the creek through steep sections and steps. The rough Castle Rock spur is another climb, with steps to the lookout platform. From there the trees open to a broad view over the Cumberland River mouth and the Southern Ocean. The return heads back toward the picnic ground on an easier stretch, though there is a steep downhill near the end.
The full loop crosses Sheoak Creek on stepping stones near Swallow Cave. Do not attempt the crossing when the water is high; the safe alternative described for this route is to retrace the way to the picnic ground. The official 9 km figure assumes the circuit can be completed. The stepping stones and uneven creek-side track make this a poor choice when water is running high.
Start at Sheoak Picnic Ground on Garvey Track. Follow the Sheoak Falls Walk signs by the information board and past the barbecue shelter toward the signed secondary car park, where the trail joins the circuit. The picnic ground has toilets, tables and gas barbecues; a potable-water source was not confirmed, so bring drinking water. Dogs are not permitted on this route in Great Otway National Park. Grey Fantails, White-plumed Honeyeaters and Laughing Kookaburras are among the birds reported along the walk, and Koalas may sometimes be seen in trees on the return; sightings are never guaranteed.
