“On a sandy estuary flat, a crowd of little blue crabs may be soldier crabs. They can walk forwards, which makes their marching groups quite distinctive.”

Hiking Ted’s Ridge Track

A short walk for the heathTed’s Ridge Track is an easy 1.

Ted’s Ridge Track is an easy 1.6 km return out-and-back from the end of Spence Avenue to the junction with Snakey Gully Track. Allow about 45 minutes, plus time to stop for flowers. The map line covers about 0.6 km each way, while the published return figure implies 0.8 km each way; treat the total as approximate; follow the signed track to the Snakey Gully junction and return the same way. Enter through the opening in the fence at the street end.

The path winds through messmate eucalypts and Austral grass-trees, with low heath plants close to the tread. Spring brings the most flowers, including orchids and the endemic Unicorn Bearded Greenhood. Some grass-trees show damage from cinnamon fungus, and fuel-reduction burns leave some trunks dark against the low understorey.

A plaque remembers Ted Faggetter (1909–2001), a local walker and co-founder of the Angahook–Lorne park friends group that became Friends of Eastern Otways. To reach the start, turn off the Great Ocean Road onto Gilbert Street opposite the Aireys Inlet Community Centre. After about 1.1 km, turn left on Katalin Road, then right onto Spence Avenue and park at its end. Dogs are not allowed on walking tracks here.
