Moggs Creek Picnic Area is a wooded picnic ground inland from the Great Ocean Road, with tables, toilets and the start of two walks through coastal forest. Visitors value the peaceful bush setting. I’d stop here for a slow lunch or to stretch your legs; the longer walk makes it more than a quick roadside break.

Choose your walkThe easier Moggs Creek Nature Walk is about 2 km.

The easier Moggs Creek Nature Walk is about 2 km. For a bigger outing, allow roughly two hours for the Ocean View circuit, about 5 km. It’s graded easy to moderate, but expect a fair amount of uphill walking. From the west end of the picnic-ground car park, follow Ocean View Track and then Moggs Creek Track; a short spur through heath reaches Ocean View Lookout, with coastal views toward Aireys Inlet and Lorne. After rain, sections can be muddy or slippery.

Forest to look forThe longer walk moves through coastal forest and heathland.

The longer walk moves through coastal forest and heathland. Look for the stand of Austral Grass-trees and listen for the ocean as the route nears the coast. Eastern Grey Kangaroos are often seen from the track, and small terrestrial orchids may flower in winter and spring. Blackened ironbark trunks recall the 1983 bushfires and later fuel-reduction burns.
