“Chestnut Top trailhead is coming up at Townsend Wye, with spring wildflowers in the first half-mile. I'd choose a short out-and-back in flower season if you want a taste of the woods without a long hike.”

Townsend Wye is informal roadside access to the Little River just beyond the Townsend entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Y-shaped road junction gave the place its name, but the visit is about getting down to the water: several short access points reach rocky banks, shallow edges and deeper pools. People come to picnic, sit by the river or get in the water. It's a small open-air stop, not a staffed attraction or a hike.

The river is inviting, but the National Park Service advises against water recreation in the park. There are no lifeguards; currents can strengthen, underwater rocks and debris may be hidden, and storms upstream can raise the water quickly. Don't jump or dive, and don't treat this as a supervised swimming hole. The footing is stony, and the water is often cold.

Make the stop workThe access is just under a mile past the Townsend entrance on Little River Road.

The access is just under a mile past the Townsend entrance on Little River Road. Several parking areas serve the Wye, but spaces can be hard to find on warm days and around midday; arriving earlier improves your odds. A parking tag is required when you park in the park for more than 15 minutes, and it doesn't reserve a space. Bring a picnic from Townsend if you plan to linger; this is river access, not a staffed food stop.

From a safe bank, look for the water dividing around a low gravel bar, with rounded stones and the wooded edge behind it. That captures the river's shape better than a close-up of the water. Stay on established access rather than crossing wet rocks for a photograph.
