Chestnut Top Trail

Chestnut Top Trail is an 8.6-mile out-and-back from Townsend Wye to the Schoolhouse Gap Trail junction and back, climbing through mixed hardwood forest to a ridge with Smokies views. Plan on about 5½ hours. The tread can be narrow, rooted, and crossed by fallen logs, so the full route suits hikers looking for a longer day on the ridge.

The shorter outing described by the park is 5.6 miles round trip. It reaches an unsigned clearing after about 2.8 miles; look for the slight opening and views to the left. For the full mapped trail, continue roughly 1.5 miles to the Schoolhouse Gap junction, then return the way you came.

Look for spring wildflowers in the first half-mile. Around a mile in, the sounds of Townsend Wye fade as the route continues through hardwoods and pines. Openings beyond about two miles look toward the Smokies crest, especially Thunderhead Mountain. The high point is near mile 2.8, followed by a slight drop into Bryant Gap and a more level stretch toward Schoolhouse Gap.

American chestnuts were once abundant on this ridge, but an introduced fungus killed most of them by the 1950s. Spring flowers and fall leaf color are still draws along the trail.

Park at Townsend Wye and cross the road to the trail entrance. A parking tag is required if you leave your car for more than 15 minutes; no reservation is needed. Pets aren't allowed. The nearest listed restroom is at Townsend Visitor Center.
