The Indiana Dunes Visitor Center is a one-story National Park Service and regional tourism center in Porter, on State Road 49 between US 20 and I-94. The beaches are elsewhere; this is where to get your bearings before choosing a beach, trail or historic site. Stop here first if the spread-out park is new to you. Rangers and destination staff can help sort routes across the national park, the state park and Porter County. Those are separate places with different access arrangements, so confirm the exact beach or trailhead before you drive off.

Pick up trail maps and brochures, ask a ranger or regional destination staff for advice, and take in the exhibit panels and two short orientation videos. Think of this as a practical, compact introduction rather than a full museum visit: it’s useful for planning and getting a feel for the landscape, not for spending hours in galleries.

The center grounds hold the Indigenous Cultural Trail, including a low boardwalk overlooking a naturalized stretch of Dunes Creek as it flows toward Lake Michigan. Look for the land acknowledgment, patterned crosswalks, large limestone turtle sculptures bearing Miami and Potawatomi calendar designs, and murals of local plants and animals. The tree trail’s signs interpret water, seasons, sustainability and plants in Potawatomi, Miami and English. The trail opened in 2023 with the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma and Pokagon Band of Potawatomi among its partners.

Dorothy Buell’s part in the storyThe center’s memorial name honors Dorothy R. Buell, an Ogden Dunes resident and English teacher.

The center’s memorial name honors Dorothy R. Buell, an Ogden Dunes resident and English teacher. On June 20, 1952, she brought 25 women together at her home to start the Save the Dunes Council. Their campaign helped build support for federal protection of the lakeshore.

What was at stakeThe park grew out of a long push to protect a landscape industry was already consuming.

The park grew out of a long push to protect a landscape industry was already consuming. Hoosier Slide, once the largest dune on the Indiana lakeshore at about 200 feet high, was removed by glass companies in the early 1900s and hauled away in railroad boxcars. In 1899, botanist Henry Cowles’s study of Lake Michigan dune plants drew wider attention to the dunes’ unusual ecosystems. Congress authorized Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore in 1966; it became a national park in 2019.

Fluid Coffee Roasters serves locally roasted coffee from the Beaches & Beyond gift shop; there’s also a bookstore and gifts, including locally made items. Treat it as a coffee stop rather than a meal destination. The 100-vehicle lot includes bus and RV spaces and an EV charger. Inside are flush restrooms, accessible and family facilities, drinking water and a bottle-filling station. The center is inland from the lakeshore, so plan on another drive to reach the beaches.
