Tucked into the island’s south shore, Chippewa Harbor Campground is a serene, out‑of‑the‑way spot that rewards the effort to reach it. It’s a favorite for travelers who want to slow down: set up camp, watch the water, and let the backcountry pace take over.

Campsites & Facilities

You’ll find a small setup here: four three‑sided shelters and a handful of tent sites. Facilities are minimal—pit toilets only—and there’s no treated water, store, or services. Plan to filter, boil, or treat lake water and pack out all your trash.

Getting There

There’s no road access. Reach it by hiking the Indian Portage Trail, paddling (canoe/kayak), or arriving by private boat. The harbor has a dock where boats can stay overnight, with about seven feet of depth under typical conditions. From June 1 through Labor Day, stays are capped at three nights, so plan your itinerary and transportation windows carefully.

What You’ll See

Expect classic Isle Royale scenery: rocky shorelines, dense forest, and wide water views that make lingering at camp very easy. The harbor’s protection keeps things tranquil, and the limited number of sites means it rarely feels busy.

Wildlife

This corner of the island sees the usual Isle Royale cast—think moose, loons, foxes, and other birdlife. Keep your distance, store food properly, and enjoy the sightings from a respectful space.

Best Time to Visit

Summer is the main season. The campground stays quieter than the park’s hubs, but do account for two things: bugs in mid‑summer and the island’s changeable weather, which can impact boat travel. Calm weather windows are the safest bet if you’re arriving or departing by water.

First‑come, first‑served—shelters and tent sites can go early in peak periods.
No fires are noted here; plan on stove cooking.
There’s no cell service or Wi‑Fi, so build in buffer time in case weather delays a pick‑up.
Chippewa is particularly good as a base camp for day explorations if you prefer not to move camp daily.
