West Chickenbone Campground

West Chickenbone Campground is a primitive backcountry camp at the west end of Chickenbone Lake, off Indian Portage Trail. It suits a backpack across the island or a canoe trip into its interior. There is no direct boat access, and the path down to the water is steep, so getting to shore takes some effort. The lake setting is the reason to choose it; this is not a quick stop from a dock.

Foot access follows Indian Portage Trail. Canoes and kayaks can reach the lake after a 1.2-mile portage from McCargoe Cove or a 0.2-mile portage from Lake Livermore. The shorter carry may fit better if you're planning a paddle from that side; from McCargoe Cove, budget for the longer haul before you start paddling.

This is primitive camping: no camp store, nonpotable water, an outhouse, and year-round food-storage lockers. There is no fire ring, so use a self-contained stove. Bring supplies from another stop and treat any water before drinking. An overnight permit is required. Individual sites are first-come, first-served for small parties; groups of seven to ten need advance reservations. Each party can stay up to two consecutive nights from June 1 through Labor Day.
