Moskey Basin Campground

Moskey Basin Campground is a backcountry camp at the west end of Rock Harbor Channel, off the Indian Portage and Rock Harbor trails. Six shelters sit among the trees beside the water, with tent camping as well. This is an overnight stop, not a drive-up campground: arrive on foot, by canoe or kayak, or by private boat.

Paddlers can approach through Rock Harbor Channel or carry a canoe or kayak over the 2-mile portage from Lake Richie. Boats can stay overnight at the dock. Every overnight stay needs a park permit. Campsites for parties of six or fewer are first come, first served, and a permit does not reserve a site; groups of seven or more need to reserve ahead. The campground has an outhouse, water source and picnic tables at its shelters, but backcountry water must be filtered or chemically treated. Bring your food and supplies.

The appeal is the wooded shoreline and the view across the water. Campers repeatedly single out sunrise, so get up early if you want the basin before the day's activity. The shelters make this a useful pause for hikers or paddlers breaking up a longer island route.
