Trail guide
Minong Ridge Overlook is a 6-mile out-and-back from Windigo, about three miles each way along the Minong Ridge Trail to a rocky opening above Lake Superior. The park rates it strenuous and allows two to six hours; plan roughly four, with time for the rough footing and the view. Choose it for a rugged half-day and a big island landscape, not for an easy stroll to a viewpoint.
From Windigo, the path passes the Washington Creek and Huginnin Cove junctions, then drops into marshy ground. It crosses creeks before climbing over rocky tread through pine forest. The ridge keeps rising and falling until the trees open at the overlook. Turn back there along the same corridor; the much longer Minong backpacking route continues beyond this day-hike destination. Rocks, roots and narrow, unpaved tread slow the going. Wet surfaces can be slippery, and changing conditions make a map, compass and navigation skills important.
The opening looks toward flat-topped Pie Island and the Canadian shoreline across Lake Superior. That distant band of land is the payoff after the sheltered woods; frame it through the foreground canopy to give the view scale. The marshy stretch also has signs of beaver and moose, though sightings are never guaranteed.
