Overview

A Jasper classic since 1952, Tekarra Restaurant pairs fine dining with a genuine cabin-in-the-woods feel at Tekarra Lodge, just south of town off Highway 93A. It’s the kind of place where you slow down—no TVs, limited Wi‑Fi, and plenty of trees, peaks, and river air right outside.

Menu & Vibe

Expect thoughtfully prepared Canadian fare: prime cuts of Alberta beef, locally sourced wild game (elk, bison, wild boar), and Ocean Wise certified seafood. Reviews consistently call out the Tekarra meatloaf, bison short ribs, and a solid cheese board. Service is personable and paced; portions can be generous on some dishes and small-plate portions truly small.

Setting

The dining room sits above the Athabasca and Miette rivers with a peaceful, rustic ambiance. If you’re lingering before or after a meal, the natural setting is the point—guests even mention s’mores by the campfire on some evenings.

Wildlife

Wildlife isn’t guaranteed, but the area sees elk, deer, and songbirds, with occasional bear sightings in the broader vicinity. Your best odds are early morning or evening when animals are most active—keep distance and follow park guidance.

Practicalities

• Reservations are strongly recommended; the room is intimate and popular in peak season.
• Historically open May–October with breakfast (around 7:30–10:30 am) and dinner (around 5:00–9:00 pm).
• The property acknowledges it’s on Treaty 6 and 8 territories and the traditional lands of several Indigenous nations.

Current Status

Wildfires in summer 2024 caused major damage to Tekarra Lodge. The lodge is closed for rebuilding and the restaurant is currently listed as temporarily closed. Check for updates before planning a meal here.

Best Time to Visit

When operating, target late spring through early fall. Book dinner on weekdays to avoid weekend demand. Early seatings are quieter; later seatings can coincide with evening wildlife movement outside. Mountain evenings run cool—bring a layer if you plan to sit on the porch or hang by the fire afterward.
