Old Fort Point Loop

This is the complete Trail 1/1a loop from the Old Fort Point trailhead and parking lot. The route climbs through forest to open rock and viewpoints, then returns on the loop. Expect steep, rocky sections, uneven bedrock, and stairs; exposed edges near the point make it important to stay on the trail and keep children close.

From the high points, look across the Athabasca River to Jasper and toward Lac Beauvert, Jasper Park Lodge, The Whistlers, Pyramid Mountain, Mt. Edith Cavell, and the surrounding ranges. Forest, open bedrock, and the river corridor give the short loop more variety than its distance suggests.

The official loop is 3.8 km (2.4 miles) round trip and usually takes 1–1.5 hours, with about 130 m (425 ft) of elevation gain. The trail begins by the information kiosk after the old iron bridge. Dogs are allowed on this route under park rules; bikes and horses are not permitted on Trail 1/1a.

Yes, if you want a short Jasper hike with a steep workout and excellent valley views. It is a poor fit for anyone looking for a flat or fully smooth path, but it is an efficient introduction to the area’s scenery and glacial geology.
