Pros & cons
PROS
- Join or leave the loop from almost anywhere in town
- Benches and viewpoints are spaced throughout for easy breaks
CONS
- Urban noise and development are always nearby
- Winter sections can be icy or snow covered
Start directly from Jasper townsite; the loop can be joined from many points and doesn’t require a dedicated trailhead or parking lot.
Year‑round multi‑use path—share with bikes. In winter, expect snow/ice. Watch for elk and follow the bear‑symbol signs to stay on route.
Trail 11—often signed as the Jasper Discovery Trail—loops right around the town of Jasper for an approachable, scenic lap of the valley. It’s a multi‑use path designed for walking and biking, with frequent benches and viewpoints that frame the Canadian Rockies beautifully. Expect a blend of town energy and natural scenery: you’ll skirt forest edges, cross open sections, and pop near shops and parks as the mountains hover in the background.
The loop is about 5.2 miles (8.3 km) total with roughly 120 m of gentle elevation change, spread out enough to keep it friendly for most fitness levels. Surfaces are mostly packed dirt and gravel, with a few segments near paved areas in town. Wayfinding is simple—look for the distinctive bear symbol on signs and maps posted at various points.
This is not a wilderness escape, and that’s the point. It’s perfect as a first‑day orientation walk or low‑commitment spin if you’re staying in town. Start anywhere along the loop—no car required—and take advantage of the benches to linger at viewpoints (sunrise and sunset light the peaks especially well). If you prefer two wheels, bike rentals are available in Jasper. Dogs are permitted on leash, and some signed subsections allow horses.
Best time to hike: spring through fall has the most reliable conditions and greenery. The route is open year‑round, but winter can bring snow and ice—check conditions and consider traction if you go off‑season.
Keep an eye out for elk near town, and remember this is a shared path—be courteous to cyclists and other users. The trail was built to help people experience Jasper more sustainably, and it doubles as a great primer on the valley’s glacial and river‑carved setting.
