Why go

If you want a moderate hike that starts right from town but still feels like a getaway, this loop delivers. It threads quiet lodgepole pine forest, skirts small, glassy lakes, and drops you into occasional views over Jasper on the descent. Expect a signed, well‑used network feel rather than a wilderness epic.

The route

This is a total 5.3‑mile loop (about 8.5 km). Start at the Jasper Activity/Aquatic Centre parking area near Pyramid Lake Road. From the kiosk, follow Trail 8 to the left. The path climbs steadily, crosses the Cabin Lake fire road, passes a large pond/wetland (Cottonwood Slough), then continues to Mina Lake. A marked spur makes a steep drop to Riley Lake—nice, but optional—before you loop back using the main trail and Trail 2 toward town. Intersections are well signed, but pay attention at junctions.

What you’ll see and feel

  • Forested singletrack with some rooty and rocky stretches, plus a bit of doubletrack.
  • Serene shorelines at Mina (and Riley if you add the spur).
  • Periodic views toward surrounding ridges and the Jasper townsite as you descend.

Wildlife is typical of the area: elk and deer are common, birdlife around the slough is good, and bears are possible even this close to town—make noise and stay alert.

Difficulty and pacing

Call it moderately challenging: roughly 300 m of gain with a steady initial climb and a few short steep bits. Most hikers take about 2.5 hours. Mountain biking here trends intermediate to advanced due to punchy climbs and technical roots/rocks.

Best time to go

Late spring through early fall is prime (May–October), with the driest, most reliable footing typically late June to September. After rain or in spring shoulder season, expect mud. Start early for quieter lakes and wildlife sightings; afternoon light can be lovely on Mina's shoreline. In winter, parts of the network are used for cross‑country skiing.

Tips

  • Optional but worthwhile: the steep spur down to Riley Lake for a quieter feel.
  • Bring an offline map and track junction numbers; this benchland network is intricate.
  • Carry bear spray. Treat lake water if you plan to refill.
  • Hikers: yield and listen for bikes; this is multi‑use.

Check current trail conditions and etiquette on the official park site before you go.

Pros

  • Start from town without a shuttle or long drive
  • Optional spur to a second quiet lake (Riley) adds variety

Cons

  • Junction‑heavy network can confuse first‑timers
  • Can be muddy in spring and after heavy rain

Parking

Park at the Jasper Activity/Aquatic Centre lot near Pyramid Lake Road (303 Pyramid Avenue); the Trail 8 kiosk is adjacent.

Caution

Multi‑use trail with bikes; expect rooty/rocky tread and short steep sections. The spur to Riley Lake is a steep descent. Carry bear spray and make noise. Trails can be muddy in spring or after rain; watch for confusing junctions and follow numbered signs.
