Park at the Jasper Activity Centre (303 Pyramid Ave) or use the pullout/parking area off Pyramid Lake Road near Cottonwood Slough.
Bears are active in berry season—carry bear spray and make noise. Multi‑use traffic (bikes, horses) and average signage; bring a map/GPS. No potable water on the loop.
Overview
This close-to-town loop dishes up a little bit of everything in a short package: shady forest, a murmuring creek, wetland and lake edges, and the occasional mountain glimpse. At roughly 3.2 miles (5.1 km) total with about 200 feet (60 m) of gentle gain, most hikers finish in 1–2 hours. It’s a moderate outing by effort—never steep, just steady—and a good fit for families or anyone wanting real Jasper vibes without committing to a big climb.
Route
You’re skirting the Pyramid Bench near Patricia and Pyramid Lakes, with Cottonwood Creek and Cottonwood Slough as your constant companions. Hike it clockwise for the smoothest flow: from either the Jasper Activity Centre area or a pullout on Pyramid Lake Road, keep right at early junctions, then near the end pick up signed Trail #2 toward Pyramid Lake Road, cross the road, and close the loop. Expect tranquil creek sections, wetland views by the slough, and short stretches with town views as you descend back toward Jasper.
Know before you go
This is a multi‑use trail system—expect mountain bikes and the occasional horse. Dogs are allowed on leash. Signage is only average, so first‑timers should carry a map or GPS to stay honest at junctions. There’s no potable water or backcountry facilities on the loop; bring what you need. Bears are known to frequent the area during berry season—make noise and carry bear spray. If you’ve got extra time, pair the hike with a picnic or paddle at nearby Pyramid Lake.
Best time to hike
May through October offers the best footing and scenery. Summer brings wildflowers and easy, mostly dry tread; late summer into early fall adds colorful foliage—and heightened bear activity around berries. Go early or late in the day, or on weekdays, to dodge the busiest trail traffic.
