Star Wars Rock Viewpoint

Step out and take a few minutes among the roadside rocks. You can scramble around the boulders to see their crystalline grains and weathered surfaces up close. The contrast between straight cracks and rounded corners is the point: you can read the rock’s long weathering history just by looking closely.

These pale boulders began as magma that cooled miles underground. Stress opened joints in the rock; groundwater seeped into those cracks and rounded the corners. Later weathering and erosion carried away small particles, uncovering the rounded boulders you see. The sharp fracture lines beside rounded surfaces show those stages together.

From the pullout, the dirt road runs past the boulder piles toward a broad desert valley and mountain ridges. For a photo, keep part of the road in frame: it pulls your eye from the nearby rocks into the wider landscape.
