Kings Canyon Visitor Center

Kings Canyon Visitor Center is an information and exhibit stop in Grant Grove Village, about three miles from the Big Stump Entrance on Highway 180, at roughly 6,500 feet. It’s a useful first stop if you want a map, a ranger’s advice, or a clearer sense of what to do before driving farther into Kings Canyon. Drop in for a quick orientation, or stay to explore the displays and watch the short park film.

Ranger advice is especially useful in winter. Roads around Grant Grove can get icy, and chains may be required even on all-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles. Ask about conditions before committing to the drive farther into the canyon; seasonal weather can change the plan.

Exhibits introduce giant sequoias, Kings Canyon, and the High Sierra. Several displays are tactile, and the short park film is available in English and Spanish. The center also has maps, books and gifts, water, and restrooms, including an accessible restroom.

Grant Grove was protected as General Grant National Park in 1890 to help save giant sequoias from logging. The trees nearby are more than a backdrop: they are the reason this area first received national protection, and the exhibits give you useful context before walking among them.

There’s no food inside the visitor center. Grant Grove Market and the village restaurant are across the plaza, so you can pair the information stop with groceries, camping supplies, or a meal. They’re separate from the center, which is handy to know if you’re expecting to eat at the information desk.
