Overview
Port Alsworth isn’t connected to a road system, and most visitors arrive by small plane. Unless you arrange a ride, expect to walk around town. The center sits midway along the easternmost active gravel runway. If you need to cross a runway, walk to its end and look left, right, and up before crossing; small aircraft can be hard to hear. There are no grocery stores in town, so plan food before you arrive.

The park’s seasonal visitor center in Port Alsworth is a good place to start: ask about local hikes, pick up Tanalian Trails maps, or borrow a bear-resistant food container. The entrance has an accessible ramp, and wheelchairs are available to borrow. A picnic table is outside.
Outside, the Wassillie Trefon Fish Cache preserves a traditional Dena’ina Athabascan building type that has largely disappeared from the region. Master woodworker Wassillie Trefon built this hand-hewn, square-notched log structure without nails or spikes. He also worked with Charlie Denison at a steam-powered sawmill on Lake Clark. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.
The exhibits tell a bigger story than the town: Lake Clark feeds the Kvichak watershed, which flows to Bristol Bay and supports one of the world’s most productive sockeye salmon spawning and rearing habitats. Nearby, the restored wooden fishing boat Libby’s Number 23 worked Bristol Bay from 1914 to 1951; only ten museum-quality double-enders are known to remain.
