Honister: Inside the Slate Mountain

Overview

About Honister Slate Mine

Why stop

  • A rare chance to step inside living Lakeland industrial history
  • Big mountain views make the drive worthwhile before the tour

Heads up

  • The narrow pass and rough underground footing are not for everyone
Honister Slate Mine sits at the top of Honister Pass between Borrowdale and Buttermere. It is England's last working slate mine, and the visit feels like living industrial heritage rather than a museum display: 450-million-year-old Westmorland Green Slate is still the reason this mountainside exists.

Before you go

Best time to go

This is one of the Lake District's better wet-weather choices because the main tour is underground and runs in most conditions, but the approach road and outdoor activities are still exposed to mountain weather. For a calmer visit, aim for a weekday or outside school-holiday periods, and allow time to arrive before a booked tour. The pass and the open slate workings photograph best when the cloud lifts; on misty days, the mine buildings and dark slate heaps give the place a more atmospheric feel.

Getting there

Drive to the summit of the B5289 Honister Pass from Borrowdale or Buttermere. The road is narrow and dramatic, so take it slowly and allow extra time, especially if mountain roads are unfamiliar. There is parking beside the visitor centre, and the seasonal Honister Rambler bus stops near YHA Honister Hause, about 100 yards from the entrance.

The best reason to come is the combination: a genuine working mine, a memorable underground tour, and a high pass where the landscape still shows the marks of quarrying. The drawbacks are equally clear: access is by a demanding mountain road, and the tour's steps and uneven floor will rule it out for some visitors.

A mine tour lasts about 90 minutes and includes roughly 50 steps down, with a handrail, plus rough and uneven ground. It is not wheelchair-accessible. Wear sturdy shoes and warm waterproof layers; helmets and headlamps are provided. The separate Via Ferrata, Climb the Mine, and other activities have their own age, height, fitness, and health requirements.

The visitor centre is step-free and includes a shop, gallery displays, café, public toilets, and an accessible unisex toilet. On-site Wi-Fi and parking are available. The mountain location does not have mains drinking water, so bring your own or buy bottled water. Dogs are limited to the visitor centre and café areas.

The standard guided mine tour takes you through hand-worked tunnels and large underground chambers, with mining stories, original workings, and atmospheric lighting. Outside, the mine buildings are surrounded by steep, rugged fells, so the drive and the setting are part of the experience even if you skip the more strenuous adventure activities.
