Overview

About Dalegarth and Stanley Ghyll Circular

Why go

  • Mossy gorge, bridges, and a memorable waterfall
  • Short loop with varied woodland and riverside scenery

Heads up

  • Steep, slippery steps and rough rock around the gorge
  • Small parking and a busy feel near the falls
The payoff is a 60-foot waterfall in a dark, ferny ravine, but the approach is part of the experience: mossy rock, tumbling cascades, rhododendrons, and a fast-running beck under a dense canopy. Dippers are worth watching for along the river. Spring and summer bring the richest greenery, autumn adds colour, and winter can make the gill feel especially atmospheric. Soft light is best for photographs in the shaded gorge.

Parking

Start at Dalegarth Station, CA19 1TG, where the named station car park, toilets, and café are beside the route. A smaller Lake District National Park Authority car park is available at Trough House Bridge near the turn for the woodland path, but spaces are limited. The trail begins from the station approach, not from the waterfall itself.

Safety

The gorge section is steep, narrow, rocky, and slippery, with steps, bridges, fast deep water, and exposed drops near the upper viewpoint. Keep dogs close around livestock and water. The River Esk stepping stones near St Catherine’s Church can be bypassed by the bridge farther along the river.

Hiking Dalegarth and Stanley Ghyll Circular

The routeThis is a 3-mile (4.

This is a 3-mile (4.8 km) loop from Dalegarth Station, with the distance counting the full circuit. Allow about 1.5 to 2 hours at a normal sightseeing pace. The path heads through the Dalegarth woodland and along the River Esk, then follows Stanley Ghyll Beck into a narrowing gorge. Bridges, steps, and rougher ground lead to Stanley Force and its upper viewing platform. The return uses the woodland and riverside paths past St Catherine’s Church before rejoining the station approach.

Effort and footingThis is moderate, not a flat station stroll.

This is moderate, not a flat station stroll. Expect roughly 165 m of ascent on uneven ground, steep steps, narrow sections, and wet rock that can be slippery. The viewpoint sits above a steep gorge, and the water below the falls is deep and fast. The route is not suitable for wheelchairs or mobility aids that cannot handle the rough, steep sections. Crowds are most noticeable around the waterfall on summer days.

Dogs are allowed, but keep them close around livestock, on the narrow gorge sections, and near the water. There are toilets, a café, and parking at Dalegarth Station, while the trail itself has no facilities. A smaller car park near Trough House Bridge is another access option, but spaces are limited. A stepping-stone crossing near St Catherine’s Church can be avoided by using the bridge farther along the river if needed.
