Thirlmere and Swirls: Viewpoint or Mountain Day

Overview

About Helvellyn Round from Thirlmere

A circular loop starting and finishing at Swirls Car Park, covering 9.3 miles (15.0 km) for the full circuit, rounded from a 9.26 mile mapped track. Total ascent is around 1,100 m, and most walkers take about 5.5 hours, with 5 to 6 hours typical and just under 5 hours for a fast, fit party. Difficulty is hard, 7/10.

Why go

  • Thirlmere and high Helvellyn views
  • Avoids the exposed Striding and Swirral Edge scrambles

Heads up

  • Long, steep mountain day with rough footing
  • Raise Beck can be hazardous in spate
The first hour is sheltered and unhurried, with views back over Thirlmere as you gain height. Grisedale Tarn sits in a fine rocky bowl, and the ridge beyond gives a long, open, high level walk with a broad summit panorama from Helvellyn when the air is clear. The return over Lower Man keeps you high for a long stretch rather than dropping you straight off the fell.

Before you go

Parking

Start at United Utilities Swirls Car Park on the A591, near NY316169. It has approximately 60 spaces and accessible toilets; a roadside lay-by north of the car park is another established access. Parking is pay and display and can fill during peak periods.

Best time to go

Helvellyn is a busy mountain, and the Swirls car park fills reliably during peak season, weekends and holidays. Start early to park and to get the ridge before the main flow of walkers. Clear visibility makes this route, so pick a settled day with good air clarity for the summit panorama; early light works well over Thirlmere on the woodland approach, and late afternoon suits the descent line over Browncove Crags.

Safety

This is a hard mountain circuit with rough paths and a steep, tiring descent from Browncove Crags. Raise Beck may be difficult or dangerous to cross in spate, and there is no reliable water on the ridge. Keep dogs under close control around sheep.

  • Leave Swirls and follow the woodland path above Thirlmere, passing Wythburn Church and Homesdale Green Bridge
  • Continue on the permissive path and across a field near Dunmail Raise, then cross Raise Beck
  • Climb steadily beside Raise Beck to Grisedale Tarn, the quiet high point of the outward leg
  • Take the engineered steps up to Dollywaggon Pike, then follow the ridge over High Crag and Nethermost Pike to Helvellyn
  • Return north to Lower Man and drop steeply on rough ground via Browncove Crags back to the car park

This is a serious mountain day on rough mountain paths, with loose and stony sections and a steep, tiring descent from Browncove Crags that punishes tired legs and knees. The high ground is fully exposed to mountain weather and can cloud in quickly, so carry map and compass skills rather than relying on views for navigation. There is no water on the ridge, so fill up before you start climbing and carry enough for several hours.

The crossing of Raise Beck early in the walk can be difficult or dangerous when the beck is in spate after heavy rain or snowmelt. Look at it before committing, and be prepared to turn the day around if the water is high and fast.

  • A roadside lay-by north of the car park is a possible alternative when Swirls is full

If you want a shorter, more direct day on the same mountain, the Helvellyn Gill path from Swirls gives an out and back ascent with far less distance. If airy scrambling is the point of your trip, look instead at an approach over Striding Edge or Swirral Edge. Both are separate outings with their own character; this loop deliberately keeps to walking ground and avoids those ridges.
