Overview

About Raven Crag and Castle Crag beside Thirlmere

Why go

  • Two summit viewpoints in a short outing
  • Strong Thirlmere views from Raven Crag

Heads up

  • Steep climb starts immediately
  • Tiny layby and rough, sometimes slippery footing
Raven Crag gives the defining view down Thirlmere reservoir, with the dam and surrounding fells spread below. Castle Crag is a quieter rocky viewpoint with the remains of a small Iron Age hillfort. The route has a satisfying change of scene from conifer forest to open crag, and the exposed tops are especially good for wide valley photographs.

Parking

Use the small layby on the western side of Thirlmere at NY 306 190, immediately opposite the starting gate. It holds only a few cars, so do not block the road, gate, or passing places. The trail starts at this layby, not at the summit pin for Raven Crag.

Safety

The climb is steep from the start, with rough ground, steps, and short boardwalk sections. Raven Crag has an unprotected cliff edge, so stay well back from the drop. The summit spurs can be narrow and the rock and timber become slippery in wet weather. Keep dogs close around livestock.

Hiking Raven Crag and Castle Crag beside Thirlmere

RouteThis is a 1.5-mile (2.

This is a 1.5-mile (2.4 km) combined out-and-back with two summit spurs from the layby on the western side of Thirlmere. The stored distance is the total walked experience: climb to Castle Crag, return to the forest track, take the spur to Raven Crag, then descend to the same access.

Start along the road, turn through the deer-fence gate, and follow the steep gravel path into the trees. Cross the forestry tracks and take the narrow path to the Castle Crag hillfort, then return to the forest road. The Raven Crag branch uses more steps and boardwalk before reaching the open top of the crag. Return by the same forest route and road.

Effort and footingThis is short but earns its height quickly, with about 297 m of ascent.

This is short but earns its height quickly, with about 297 m of ascent. The first climb is continuously steep, and the woodland path becomes rough underfoot. Expect uneven ground, bracken, steps, a footbridge, and short boardwalk sections. It is manageable for a fit walker, but the steepness makes it feel harder than the mileage suggests.

Plan itAllow about 1.5 hours at a normal sightseeing pace.

Allow about 1.5 hours at a normal sightseeing pace. Dry weather makes the rough paths and steep steps easier, while rain can make rock and timber slippery. The tops are exposed and have little shelter. Dogs can use the route, but keep them close and on a lead where livestock is present. For a gentler nearby outing, the reservoir paths are easier; choose this walk for the quick climb and crag-top views.
