Parking

Use Rydal Road car park at 1 to 3 Rydal Road, Ambleside, then walk to the town centre start. The council lists 171 general spaces and 10 accessible spaces. This route has no dedicated waterfall car park; do not confuse the car park with the trail's town centre start.

Best time to go

This is a well known short walk close to a busy town, so expect company on weekends and through the main holiday season. Early mornings are noticeably quieter.

  • Go in daylight, when roots and steps are easy to read under the canopy.
  • Earlier or later light photographs best beneath the trees.
  • Water is most dramatic after wet weather, but that is also when the rock and roots are slickest.
  • Autumn color in the gorge is a reliable seasonal draw.

Safety

Steep drops beside the gorge and viewing platforms, slippery roots, mud and rock after rain, powerful water during high flow, and a steeper, narrower return section. Keep children and dogs close and behind railings; do not scramble toward the falls.

This is an out-and-back from Ambleside town centre with a short loop around the falls themselves, and 1.1 miles is the total round trip, not one way. You gain roughly 240 feet, most of it in the woodland section, so it is a quick outing that still feels like a proper climb.

The return side of the loop is steeper and narrower than the way up, so retracing the approach path is a sensible choice if you want easier footing.

  • Start outside the tourist information centre in the town centre.
  • Follow the one-way streets and Stock Ghyll Lane uphill on pavement and quiet lane.
  • Enter the woods at the signed southern entrance and climb beside the beck on earth, roots and steps.
  • Follow the red arrow markers to the upper viewing platform and the bridge over the top of the falls.
  • Either take the loop side back down or retrace your approach, then walk the lane back into town.

Dense deciduous woodland, Stock Ghyll running fast beside the path, a string of cascades and a main fall of roughly 70 feet dropping through a narrow wooded gorge. Fenced viewing platforms give you the best angles. The beck once powered mills in Ambleside, including bobbin making, which is part of why the lane and woods are here at all.

Easy walking to start, then a rough woodland path with tree roots, uneven ground, steps and mud after rain. Railings protect the main viewpoints. Fit walkers will find it straightforward, but it is not a smooth surface and it is not a pushchair route. There is a disabled access point that reaches the top viewing platform only.

Steep drops sit close to the gorge and the viewpoints, and the water can be powerful after heavy rain. Wet rock, mud and roots cause most slips here. Keep children close and stay behind the railings and fencing rather than scrambling toward the water.

Dogs, Parking And AccessDogs are welcome.

Dogs are welcome. Keep them on a lead near the falls, the viewpoints and the stream, where the drops are the real risk. For driving, the Rydal Road car park is the most clearly documented option, with 171 general spaces and 10 accessible spaces a short walk from the town centre start. No permanent permit is needed for the walk.

Wansfell Pike rises above the same woods and can be linked from here, but treat it as a separate, much longer and considerably harder hike with open fell views. It is not part of this 1.1 mile route.
