This is an about 1.5-mile out-and-back from the north shore of Juniper Lake to a ridge viewpoint. The mapped corridor climbs about 0.75 mile each way, with roughly 400 feet of gain. It is a moderate hike; allow about an hour to 90 minutes if you spend time looking around on the ridge. Much of the upper route is sun-exposed, so the effort comes in a short, steepening climb rather than a long walk.

Hiking Inspiration Point Trail
Through the treesThe path starts nearly level among lodgepole pine, western white pine and red fir.
The path starts nearly level among lodgepole pine, western white pine and red fir. As the grade steepens, the forest opens; a weather-battered Jeffrey pine stands off the trail about 0.3 mile from the start. Manzanita and a small patch of bush chinquapin mark the approach to the crest.

The crest arrives around 0.6 mile in, but the path continues roughly 200 yards along the ridge before the broadest views open. From there, Juniper Lake, Crystal Cliffs and Mount Harkness fill the near view, with Lassen Peak and the Cinder Cone and Snag Lake country farther across the volcanic landscape. Continue to the end of the ridge before turning back. For a photo, keep a little of the ridge pines at the edge of the frame; they give the lake and distant slopes a sense of scale.
