Trail guide
Waterfall Trail is a 2¼-mile round-trip out-and-back from Glenbranter's Forestry and Land Scotland car park to a bridge beside the large Allt Robuic waterfall. Allow about 1½ hours. The climb and uneven ground make this a strenuous short walk rather than a gentle woodland stroll.
The path starts by the shared walk-start posts and climbs steps to a forestry track, with views opening back over Glenbranter. A woodland footpath passes an information board about lichens and mosses, then dips to another track. Rhododendrons here recall Glenbranter's former botanic-garden role before the gardens moved to Benmore. A signed side path reaches a wildlife hide; pause quietly, since red squirrels, roe deer, buzzards, woodpeckers and crossbills are among the possible sightings. Return to the main line, ignore a mountain-bike track crossing it, then take the gorge fork.
The trail runs high above Allt Robuic, with a handrail along the steeper edge. A short viewpoint detour looks across the drop to a side stream; the larger falls are partly screened from here. Wooden steps descend to the burn at the bridge beside the large waterfall, the route's main reward. The falls are especially full after heavy rain. At the bridge, frame the white water with the dark ledges and tree trunks around it; that shows the scale better than a tight crop of water alone.
Use the Glenbranter Forestry and Land Scotland car park, reached from the signposted A815 between Strachur and the north end of Loch Eck. Parking is free. The route has rough gravel, exposed roots, narrow muddy sections, steep slopes, uneven steps and several bridges. Take care where the path runs high above the gorge; the rail helps, but the drop remains close. Dogs are allowed under the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, but keep them close to protect wildlife. From April to July, use a short lead or keep a dog close at heel in forest areas to avoid disturbing ground-nesting birds.
