Cougar Rock Campground

Overview

Set in old-growth forest at roughly 3,180 feet, Cougar Rock Campground is the park’s go-to basecamp on the southwest side—about 2 miles from Longmire and a short drive to Paradise. With 173 individual sites plus 5 group sites spread across multiple loops, it balances convenience with that classic mossy, ferny Pacific Northwest vibe.

Why Camp Here

Location, location, location. This is the closest drive-in campground to Paradise, the park’s busiest hub for views and trailheads. You can be on the mountain early, beat the day crowds, and still be back in camp for dinner. The famed Wonderland Trail passes nearby, so long-distance hikers and day hikers alike get easy trail access.

The Setting & Nearby

Campsites sit under towering conifers with filtered views and plenty of shade. From camp, you’re well placed for waterfall stops like Narada and Christine Falls, the historic Longmire area, and the meadows and big vistas up at Paradise. Expect lush understory, cool forest air, and the steady hush of nearby rivers.

Amenities You Can Count On

This is a rustic National Park campground: flush toilets and potable water spigots are provided, and each site has a picnic table and fire ring. There’s a dump station for RVs, but no electrical hookups, no showers, and no on-site food or store. Plan to be self-sufficient.

Wildlife Notes

Foxes are known camp visitors here—cute, curious, and very motivated by unattended snacks. Store all food and scented items securely. You may also spot deer and plenty of birds moving through the forest.

Season, Reservations & Popularity

Cougar Rock typically operates late spring through fall and is extremely popular in summer. Most sites are reservable (group sites are booked separately), and a few may be first-come when the season allows. If your dates are summer or coincide with peak wildflowers (July–August), reserve as early as possible.

Ranger Programs

The campground features an amphitheater that sometimes hosts evening ranger talks and junior ranger activities—an easy add-on if you’re staying multiple nights.

• Summer weekdays for lighter crowds; arrive early for quieter camp loops.
• Mornings and evenings give you cooler temps for hiking and softer Paradise light.
• Always check current road conditions before you drive in—access to Paradise can be affected by closures or delays.

Bring all your groceries and camp basics—there’s no store, no restaurant, no Wi‑Fi, and no showers on site. Weather swings are common even in midsummer; pack layers and rain gear.
