The WIC generally operates from late May to mid-October, then closes for winter. During the off-season, the park directs permit visitors to the Longmire Museum across the road. Longmire itself is open year-round, but winter road access toward Paradise can change, so check current road status before driving.

The Longmire Wilderness Information Center is Mount Rainier’s seasonal wilderness desk, inside the two-story Longmire Administration Building. Wilderness rangers help with permits, route planning, maps, and trail-condition updates. A three-dimensional model of the park gives you a quick sense of how the mountain’s ridges and valleys fit together. If you’re heading into the backcountry, this is a useful stop while the desk is staffed.

The lower floor has glacial-boulder masonry and the upper story is covered in half-log veneer, a distinctive Park Service Rustic design. Those materials were chosen to help the building sit naturally among Longmire’s trees and rocks.

Longmire began as James Longmire’s homestead, lodging stop, and mineral-springs resort. When Mount Rainier became a national park in 1899, Longmire became its headquarters. The original 1916 headquarters building is now the Longmire Museum across the road, a separate stop from the WIC.
