Longmire Museum

Longmire Museum is a compact, single-room museum inside the former park headquarters, among the historic buildings of Longmire on Mount Rainier’s southwest side. It’s a useful short stop for park information and an introduction to the park’s geology, wildlife and early history. Expect a small collection, not an afternoon in a large museum.

The entry has shelves, an information desk and wall panels; the single exhibit room includes wildlife displays and a taxidermied mountain lion behind glass. Outside, a large tree cross-section sits under a small shelter, with dates marked along its rings. For a photo, frame the dark-sided building with the tree display beside it, then look closely at the rings.

The museum is 6.5 miles east of the Nisqually Entrance on the main park road. The main Longmire lot behind the museum, inn and store has about 80 spaces. There’s no restroom inside the museum; a public building with flush toilets and running water sits between it and the historic gas station. The museum itself has no food service, but the adjacent National Park Inn has a restaurant and coffee at its front desk.

Paved paths can be steep and uneven, and the narrowest museum doorway or walkway is 29 inches wide. There’s a lower accessible section at the information desk. Longmire has no cell service; Wi-Fi is available on the museum porch.

James Longmire’s homestead, lodging and mineral-springs resort were here before Congress established Mount Rainier National Park in 1899. Longmire then became the park’s headquarters. The museum building dates to 1916, when it served as headquarters and the superintendent’s office. In 1928, Chief Naturalist C. Frank Brockman persuaded the superintendent not to demolish it and turned it into a place for exhibits; some of those displays are still used.

Longmire is a National Historic Landmark District, with 58 contributing buildings from 1888 to 1942 and an unusually extensive collection of Park Service Rustic architecture. The museum is part of its historic plaza, so a short walk among the nearby buildings shows how this early park headquarters was laid out.

Across the road, the 0.7-mile Trail of the Shadows loop passes James Longmire’s early homestead and mineral springs, then circles through meadow and forest. The volcanic springs helped create the low-elevation meadow; Iron Mike Springs is among the named features on the loop. A meadow spur opens views toward Mount Rainier and Rampart Ridge, making this an easy way to turn a quick museum visit into a longer Longmire stop.
