Ohanapecosh Visitor Center

This small, seasonal visitor center sits on State Route 123 about 12 miles north of Packwood, among the firs and cedars beside Ohanapecosh Campground. It’s a handy short stop for trail information and local history before heading toward Hot Springs or Silver Falls. Think orientation and exhibits, not a big museum or a Mount Rainier viewpoint. Ohanapecosh is inaccessible in winter, and the center’s usual-season dates vary, so check access before planning around it.

The center is one large room, with exhibits on local history and natural resources, an information desk, a little seating, and books and maps for sale. When it’s staffed, a ranger or volunteer can answer questions. It’s a compact stop rather than an extensive museum or shop. The visitor-center area also has public restrooms, parking, and a bottle-filling station; these facilities operate seasonally.

A path behind the building connects to the Hot Springs and Silver Falls trails. Just outside, a large tree cross-section carries dates along its rings, turning the trunk into a timeline; covered benches give you a place to pause. The low-elevation forest here includes Douglas-fir, western red cedar, and western hemlock, with trees hundreds of years old and some around a thousand. This side of the park is generally drier and sunnier than the west side.

The name Ohanapecosh comes from a Taidnapam (Upper Cowlitz) habitation site on the river and is thought to mean “standing at the edge.” Archaeologists found chipped stone tools and hearths at nearby low-elevation sites, dated to 3,700–6,400 years ago. They may have served as stops on routes between the lowlands and summer sites higher in the mountains.

Commercial camps grew up around the springs in the early 1900s. A resort began in 1921 and later added a road from Packwood, a hotel, bathhouses, and cabins. The area joined the park in 1931, and the resort buildings were demolished in 1961. The springs have returned to a natural state and are too small for bathing, so don’t plan on a soak.
