Box Canyon

Box Canyon is a quick roadside stop with outsized payoff: a narrow slot canyon carved by the Muddy Fork of the Cowlitz River, viewed from a short paved loop and a wooden footbridge that lets you peer straight down into the chasm. It’s a distinctive feature here—called out as an unusual sight for the park—and a perfect leg‑stretcher on a drive.

Expect tight canyon walls and frothing water far below; from the footbridge you can look about 180 feet straight down. The loop’s viewpoints line up the gorge nicely, and the whole experience packs a lot of geology into just a few minutes. Nickel Creek is nearby, making this an easy add-on stop as you explore the area.

Plan on a very short, paved loop of roughly 0.3 miles. It’s easy, quick, and family-friendly. The best perspective is from the footbridge—don’t just stop at the first overlook.
