Guide
Cupola Hut is a standard eight-bunk hut at 1,390 m in the upper Travers River Valley, with the St Arnaud and Travers ranges rising above it. It makes sense as an overnight goal on a multi-day backcountry trip or as a base for Mt Cupola; it is not a short walk from a road. From Lakehead Hut, one described itinerary covers about 18 km to Cupola, with the final 4 km gaining roughly 600 m after John Tait Hut.
Expect a small, basic shelter with eight bunks and mattresses, a wood burner, a water tank and a pit toilet. The tank water is untreated, so bring a way to treat it, and pack your own food; there is no food service. The approach follows the relatively level Travers valley floor before the climb steepens beyond John Tait Hut.
A 2021 restoration gave the hut a new roof and wall linings, plus a water tank and wood burner. Once you arrive, walk behind the hut for a wider look across the alpine setting; visitors have singled out the views there.
