West Sabine Hut

West Sabine Hut is a serviced 30-bunk backcountry hut at 680 m in the West Branch Sabine valley, just upstream of Sabine Forks. It is a remote overnight stop on the Travers–Sabine Circuit and Te Araroa, not a roadside attraction. Book before you set out; hut stays require reservations, and you shouldn't count on a walk-in bunk.

From Upper Travers Hut, the route estimate is six to nine hours, depending on conditions. It crosses Travers Saddle, drops about 1,000 m through scree and stunted beech toward the Sabine forks, crosses the deep East Branch chasm, then follows the West Branch upstream to the hut. The full circuit is an 80 km advanced tramp that usually takes four to seven days, so plan on this as an overnight waypoint rather than a casual day walk.

Travers Saddle is most favorable from October to May, but snow can remain on alpine passes into late November and freezing conditions are possible at any time. The Sabine side is avalanche-exposed; winter and early-spring travel calls for alpine gear and experience. Dogs aren't allowed on the circuit.

There are 30 bunks, mattresses and heating, plus non-flush toilets. The tap water is untreated and must be boiled before drinking. No food service is listed, so bring food for your stay. Campers within 200 m may use the hut's water and toilets.

The first West Sabine Hut opened in 1972 with eight bunks. It was extended in the mid-1990s to the 30-bunk hut walkers use now. A separate eight-bunk Sabine Forks Hut stood nearby for about a decade before it was removed.
