Travers Falls

Travers Falls is an about-20-metre cascade on the Travers River, dropping into a deep bowl in Nelson Lakes National Park. Its signed spur sits on the Travers–Sabine Circuit between John Tait Hut and Upper Travers Hut. It’s a memorable detour if you’re already tramping through the valley, but this is an advanced, 80-kilometre multi-day route, not a roadside waterfall.

The turnoff is between the two huts. One guided itinerary places it roughly 1 kilometre beyond John Tait Hut; use that as a route estimate rather than an official measurement. October to May generally brings the more favorable conditions, but freezing can happen at any time of year, and stream crossings can become unsafe after heavy rain.

There’s no food service or road parking at the falls. John Tait and Upper Travers huts are the overnight stops on either side; they have non-flush toilets and untreated water that needs boiling. Carry food for the tramp and treat the huts as route facilities, not amenities at the waterfall.

The cascade drops into a clear pool framed by forest and moss-covered rock. The signed side track brings you to the view; for a photo, keep both the falling water and the pool in frame so the bowl is part of the scene.
