Perched at 1,327 m, Upper Travers Hut is a DOC serviced hut built in 2004 to replace an older hut that sat in an avalanche path. It’s a high, open setting with big valley views—more than just a roof over your head.
The hut sleeps 24 on bunks with mattresses and is heated by a closed fire/wood stove. Sleeping areas can be closed off from the communal space, and there are two separate dorm-style rooms—handy for spreading out groups.
Water comes from a bore with taps, but reliability varies. Visitors have reported the indoor tap occasionally not working while the outdoor tap usually does. Treat or boil all water regardless. Toilets are long-drop; bring your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer.
This is a classic overnight on the Travers–Sabine Circuit, typically used the night before or after crossing Travers Saddle. If you’re pacing your days around the saddle, this hut is the logical launch pad or recovery stop.
Lindavia ("lake snow") is present in Lakes Rotoiti and Rotoroa. Dry all gear for 48 hours before entering any alpine lake or tarn, and use the cleaning stations at Coldwater, Lakehead, and Sabine Huts if your gear has touched lake or river water. Do not touch the water in Rotomairewhenua/Blue Lake or Rotopōhueroa/Lake Constance.
Time your stay for the night before or after a Travers Saddle crossing on the Travers–Sabine Circuit; that’s when this hut shines.
