Grandview Picnic Area is the social heart of the Grandview rim—shady tables, big shelters, and a front‑row seat to one of the best river bends in the Appalachians. You’re a short stroll from the Main Overlook, perched more than 1,000 feet above the New River with views of the broad horseshoe in the gorge and the tiny trains threading the tracks far below.

Scenery & Seasons

The view pays out year‑round, but Grandview really shines during rhododendron season: Catawba rhododendrons typically pop purple in mid‑May, and great rhododendrons bloom white around July. Expect a sea of green in summer, crisp clarity in winter, and rich color in fall.

Practicalities & Rules

Shelters can be reserved in advance and are popular for reunions and gatherings. Alcohol is prohibited; pets must be leashed. The grounds are open year‑round, with the visitor center operating seasonally.

A Bit of Context

Grandview started life as a West Virginia state park. The Civilian Conservation Corps built many of the roads, shelters, and picnic spots still in use today. It’s now one of the signature day‑use hubs in the park, pairing classic CCC picnic infrastructure with big‑time scenery.
