Grandview Rim Trail

Grandview Rim Trail is a 1.6-mile one-way footpath linking Main Overlook with Turkey Spur Overlook, so hiking to the far end and retracing the same corridor makes a 3.2-mile round trip. This is the walk for a second angle on the New River Gorge, not a continuous cliff-edge viewpoint path: most of the connection is in woodland, with the river appearing in openings. If your priority is the overlooks themselves, Turkey Spur is reachable by road, so you can visit it without walking the full connection. Allow about two hours for the round trip with stops. The overall grade is moderate, but several short, steep hills near Turkey Spur are the part you feel.

Begin by the Main Overlook visitor area. The trail leaves the overlook and picnic complex, then follows a winding path through the woods toward Turkey Spur. A self-guided brochure interprets the first half mile, so pick it up before leaving if you want to follow the stops. This route is point-to-point between the overlooks. To finish at your starting car, turn around at Turkey Spur and retrace the trail, or arrange a vehicle shuttle via Turkey Spur Road. The far lot is small, and the road is narrow enough that extra-large vehicles are not recommended. Keep the 3.2-mile figure for this trail alone; routes that add Castle Rock or Tunnel are separate combinations.

Much of the route stays under trees on dirt and earth, so the river does not fill the view at every turn. There are openings with river-bend and gorge views, and some are easier to see after leaves fall. Near Turkey Spur, a few short steep hills explain why this is more than a flat walk between overlooks. The last approach to the rock-top viewpoint uses wooden steps; slow down there and take care on the stairs. The route is hiking-only, and the final overlook approach is part of the walk.

Main Overlook gives you a broad view from the south end. Along the connecting trail, the New River appears in shorter glimpses between trees; at Turkey Spur the path climbs onto the open rock for a wide view across the river valley. The perspective changes as the river curves around wooded hills, so the two ends are not simply duplicate viewpoints. At an open bend, include a bit of foreground rock, railing or foliage in a photo; the near edge helps show how far the river sits below the rim.

The gorge below the trail is a V-shaped canyon carved by erosion through the Appalachian Plateau. Its walls expose sandstone and shale, and the view from the rim makes the river's route around the ridges easier to read. The New River kept its ancient course as the Appalachians rose, cutting through the mountains rather than diverting around them. That long process is why this short walk links two high overlooks above a deep, continuous gorge.

The Grandview woods are home to animals including deer, foxes, wild turkeys, box turtles, skinks, bats and many birds; those are possibilities in the area, not promised sightings along the trail. Picnic areas are near the Main Overlook start, but there is no drinking water at trailheads, so bring what you need. Pets are allowed on park trails when kept on a physical leash no longer than six feet.
