Tunnel Trail

Overview

A short, character-packed walk in Grandview, this trail is all about cool sandstone, deep shade, and rock features. It’s officially 0.5 miles one way or commonly done as a 0.6-mile loop. Expect short stair sections, uneven rock, and a pleasantly cool microclimate even on hot days.

What You’ll See

You’ll thread below big rock outcrops and a dramatic overhang, with lush, moist vegetation hugging cold sandstone walls. It’s more about texture and mood than big vistas—think mossy rock, filtered light, and a tucked-in forest feel.

Important Closure Note

The namesake rock “tunnels” are closed due to safety concerns (one entrance is boarded, another area suffered fire damage). The rest of the trail is open—obey all posted closures and do not enter the tunnels.

Route and Access

The trail anchors between two super-convenient access points: one just off the paved walkway to Grandview’s Main Overlook, the other near the baseball diamond/playground by the Main Overlook parking area. Walk it as a quick loop by starting from either end and returning via the lot or paved path. Plan on 15–30 minutes, depending on photo and poke-around time.

Difficulty and Conditions

Short but not flat: there are steps on both ends and some slick rock when wet. Most hikers with basic fitness will be fine, but it’s not ideal for mobility limitations or unstable footwear. Dogs are welcome on leash.

Best Time to Hike

April through October is the sweet spot, and the shade makes it kinder on hot days. Go after dry weather if you can—the sandstone and steps can be slippery when damp. Early or late in the day helps with quieter conditions.

Make It a Mini-Loop Day

Pair this with the nearby Main and North Overlooks for the views this loop doesn’t provide. If you want more trail time in Grandview, the Castle Rock loop in the same area delivers additional cliffline interest and overlook access.
