The North Cascades Environmental Learning Center is a wooded, 16-building residential education campus on Diablo Lake’s north shore. It’s a rewarding place to learn with naturalists, stay for a family program or retreat, or join a boat outing. Plan it as an arranged visit, not an open-door visitor center: the campus directs visitors to programs, tours or group bookings, and a general walk-in schedule isn’t established.

Find it at the road endFrom State Route 20 at milepost 127.

From State Route 20 at milepost 127.5, turn onto Diablo Dam Road, cross Diablo Dam and continue to the parking area at the road’s end. The Diablo Lake Trail starts from the lot. The lot’s capacity and fee aren’t published, and parking access for people without a program reservation isn’t established.

Programs range from youth education and family getaways to adult classes, retreats and overnight hiking base camps. They draw on natural and cultural history, science, humanities and the arts. Naturalist-led activities can include hikes and paddling or boating on Diablo Lake; the dock is reserved for Institute watercraft and programs. Guests often single out the staff, the meals and the lake-and-mountain setting as the best parts of a stay.

Three guest lodges have seven to eight rooms apiece, with bunk beds and shared gender-specific restrooms; the campus can host up to 92 participants. Meals are included during program stays, and the lakeside dining hall serves local and organic food. This isn’t a public restaurant, so don’t plan to drop in for lunch without an arranged visit.

The center opened in 2005 through a partnership among North Cascades Institute, Seattle City Light and the National Park Service. Its classrooms, library, meeting spaces, outdoor shelters and amphitheater are spread through the woods rather than gathered in one exhibit hall. The buildings and central campus pathways are ADA-accessible; hillside routes beyond the main campus may take extra assistance.

Wildlife around the campusBlack bears live near the center and occasionally appear on nearby trails.

Black bears live near the center and occasionally appear on nearby trails. Cougars are present too, but they’re elusive. Dogs aren’t allowed on campus except service animals; leashed dogs are allowed on some nearby National Recreation Area trails.
