Parking

Use the Rainy Pass south parking area on State Route 20 at the Maple Pass trailhead; the Lake Ann walk starts on the shared approach. The lot holds roughly 40 cars and can fill; vault toilets and picnic tables are available, but there is no potable water. An America the Beautiful or Northwest Forest pass is accepted.

Best time to go

The trail is rated easy to moderate, with about 700 feet of gain. Wildflowers color the high ridges in July and August; golden alpine larches and red huckleberry bring fall color. Snowmelt can make the path hard to follow into mid-July. State Route 20 closes seasonally in winter, cutting off Rainy Pass access. Leashed dogs are allowed, but camping is prohibited within a quarter-mile of Lake Ann. The trailhead requires an America the Beautiful or Northwest Forest pass.

Safety

The open shore has little shade, and snowmelt can make the trail hard to follow into mid-July. State Route 20 closes seasonally in winter, cutting off Rainy Pass access. Camping is prohibited within a quarter-mile of Lake Ann.

“Up ahead is Rainy Pass, where you can choose a short lake walk or a much bigger ridge hike. For about an hour out of the car, I'd choose Rainy Lake: two miles round trip on pavement, ending below cliffs and waterfalls.”

Hiking Lake Ann Trail (Rainy Pass)

A shorter way to Lake AnnLake Ann Trail (Rainy Pass) is a 3.

Lake Ann Trail (Rainy Pass) is a 3.4-mile out-and-back from Rainy Pass, using the shared Maple Pass approach before branching onto the Lake Ann trail. It reaches the lake’s open glacial basin without committing to the longer Heather–Maple Pass loop. The climb is steady but moderate: allow about 2.5 hours with a stop at the shore.

From the south Rainy Pass lot, the route follows Maple Pass Trail 740 through second-growth forest and dappled shade. It passes a broad avalanche meadow and more timber before the Lake Ann branch, about 1.25 miles in. Follow the marked Lake Ann trail to the east shore; the mapped walk ends at the lake rather than continuing around the pass loop.

Lake Ann sits in a talus bowl carved by glaciers, with the Heather and Maple Pass ridgeline rising above it. The shore gives you a close view of the basin and a quieter-feeling alternative to climbing higher on the full loop. Driftwood along the water makes a good place to pause when it is accessible; the nearby meadows offer another place to sit. For a photo, include the near-shore driftwood with the cirque behind it.
