Parking
Use the free Kildale railway station car park, which has space for about six cars. Do not park on the narrow village roads. The station has toilets, including a RADAR-key accessible toilet, and Esk Valley railway services stop at Kildale.

North York Moors National Park, EN
Quiet lanes and a steep grass descent to a lost ironstone mine
Overview
An out-and-back walk of 5.3 km / 3.3 miles round trip, taking about 1 hour 30 minutes. The app map stores the one-way corridor to the mine once, so the physical line you see is half of the total distance you will walk. Ascent and descent are 131 m each, with the station at about 161 m, a high point near 248 m and the mine sitting around 208 m.

Trail guide
There are no steps or stiles, but the gradients are sustained, roughly 1:7 to 1:5, and the final drop to the mine is steep. Underfoot you get quiet roads, paved sections near Kildale, a stone-surfaced bridleway, then a natural grass bridleway down to the workings. The return means climbing back out of the valley on that same steep grass.
Warren Moor Mine is a remarkably preserved Victorian ironstone-mining landscape. Visible remains include the chimney, boiler house, engine beds, shafts, spoil and the levelled mine plateau, plus hollows where drifts have collapsed. The mining attempts here failed, and the remoteness of the site is why the industrial archaeology still reads so clearly on the ground.
The mine is private property and fenced to protect deep excavations. Stay on the public route, keep out of the fenced workings, and take care near steep drops and standing structures. Never approach shafts or drop anything into them.
The route is dog-friendly and follows roads and bridleways. On North York Moors moorland, dogs must stay on rights of way and under close control. Use a short lead or keep your dog to heel where required, particularly near livestock and ground-nesting birds.
Use the free Kildale railway station car park, which holds about six cars. Do not park on the narrow village roads. The station has toilets, including a RADAR-key accessible toilet, and Esk Valley railway services stop at Kildale, which makes arriving by train practical.
This is a short, history-led walk rather than a grand viewpoint hike. A good share of the distance is on roads, and the steep gradients make it less universally easy than a 5.3 km label suggests. Small car park capacity also means arriving early is wise if you are driving.
