Overview

About Ilam Park

Why stop

  • Hall, church and limestone parkland make a memorable walking setting
  • Useful base for Dovedale and Manifold Valley routes

Heads up

  • Popular times can be busy around the access area
  • Longer routes quickly become uneven and hilly beyond the short circuit
Most people race straight to the Dovedale stepping stones and miss this. Ilam Park is the civilised end of the same landscape: a grand hall and an old church standing together above sweeping lawns and mature trees, with the limestone hills toward Thorpe Cloud and Dovedale rising beyond. It works as a destination in its own right and as a practical base for longer walks, which is more than a generic country park offers.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

Come early in the day for a calmer park, easier parking and low light raking across the lawns and the church tower. That is also the sensible start time if you intend to walk on to Dovedale or loop out into the Manifold Valley, since both are longer outings than the parkland alone suggests. Wear proper footwear if you plan anything past the accessible circuit.

More about Ilam Park

What you actually see and doIlam Hall and Holy Cross Church side by side, the defining view of the place, with paths…
  • Ilam Hall and Holy Cross Church side by side, the defining view of the place, with paths threading between fenced lawns and specimen trees.
  • Remnants of the Italianate garden, including a small Italian Garden tucked below the stable block, more a fragment of former grandeur than a full formal garden.
  • Open parkland with preserved medieval ridge-and-furrow earthworks, the corrugated ripples of old ploughing still readable across the grass.
  • Ancient semi-natural woodland of protected conservation value on the slopes, sitting at the southern end of the Manifold Valley.
  • A visitor centre exhibition on Ilam and the wider South Peak Estate, useful for ten minutes of context before you walk.
  • A tea room and a gift shop stocking maps, walk leaflets, books, cards and gifts.
The Hall: set expectationsIlam Hall is run as a youth hostel, not an open house tour.

Ilam Hall is run as a youth hostel, not an open house tour. You can admire the facade and walk the grounds, but do not arrive expecting staterooms, guided rooms or period interiors. The interest here is outside: the setting, the church, the earthworks and the walking.

Choosing your walkShort and accessible: a circuit of roughly 0.
  • Short and accessible: a circuit of roughly 0.8 miles, about 20 minutes, around the Hall, good if you want the views without committing to hills.
  • To Dovedale Stepping Stones: about 2.4 miles, roughly an hour each way, so plan for a half day there and back. It is not suitable for pushchairs, and dogs should be kept on a lead.
  • A full day out: a circular route toward Wetton of about 16 km, allow around 4.5 hours, for walkers who want the Manifold Valley properly.
Honest drawbacksThe easy circuit is genuinely easy, but that does not make the whole property level.

The easy circuit is genuinely easy, but that does not make the whole property level. Beyond it there are steps, uneven ground and real gradients, and the terrain toward Dovedale and the valley is hilly. The site can also get busy at popular times, particularly when Dovedale walkers are using the car park. There is overflow parking, plus designated parking, toilets, an accessible toilet and Changing Places facilities.
