Overview

About Dovedale to Milldale Walk

Why go

  • The limestone gorge continues beyond the famous stepping stones to Milldale.
  • Viator’s Bridge gives the walk a clear destination before the return.

Heads up

  • The village is a long way from the starting car park, so the full route means retracing your steps.
  • The river crossing depends on water level, and the trail has rough stone and steps.
This is a 6-mile out-and-back from Dovedale car park to Milldale and back on the same route. It follows the River Dove through a narrow limestone gorge, with the famous stepping stones near the start and a village and old bridge at the far end. Allow 4 to 6 hours if you want to stop along the way. Choose it when you want more than the short visit to the stones; turn around there instead if you do not want a half-day walk.

Parking

Start at the National Trust Dovedale car park by the stepping stones and return to the same lot. It can fill by 9 a.m. on weekends, bank holidays and school holidays, so an early start helps. Public toilets are beside the car park. Milldale has a separate car park at the far end; starting there still means retracing the route or arranging separate transport.

Safety

The Dovedale stepping stones can be submerged or impassable after heavy rain; cross only when safe and check National Trust guidance. The gorge path includes uneven rock and stone steps.

Hiking Dovedale to Milldale Walk

Follow the river northThe Dovedale stepping stones are the route's first crossing.

The Dovedale stepping stones are the route's first crossing. Use them only when the river is low enough; after heavy rain they can be covered or impassable. Beyond them the trail winds alongside the Dove beneath limestone crags and through ancient ash woodland. The path does not climb Thorpe Cloud or Bunster: those are separate uphill walks. Watch for Ilam Rock, the Tissington Spires and the rock arch at Reynard's Cave, where the gorge's limestone has been carved by water. The river corridor alternates between packed path and rough rock, with stone steps and short climbs at bends. A few sections are rocky enough to slow you down, particularly when damp.

The path ends at Viator's Bridge in Milldale, where you can cross into the village before retracing the same way. The turnaround keeps this walk distinct from longer circuits over Bunster and the fields. Dogs are allowed but must be kept on leads in the reserve and around grazing animals. Polly's Café in Milldale is a separate, seasonal stop for sandwiches, snacks and ice cream; do not plan on it as your only food option outside its open season.
