Overview

About Tissington Hall

Why stop

  • Jacobean architecture
  • Lived-in family history

Heads up

  • Limited selected-day access
  • Only a selection of rooms is shown
Built in 1609 by Francis FitzHerbert to replace a moated fortification guarding the Norman church of St Mary's, the Hall has been the FitzHerbert family home for over 400 years. It is still a lived-in family house rather than a museum, and the tours reflect that: personal, anecdotal, and built around family history and portraits rather than roped-off displays and interpretation panels.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

With a short daily window and half-hourly tours, arriving near the noon opening gives you the most flexibility and leaves time in the garden afterwards. Tissington village is popular on summer weekends, so the village itself feels busiest then. For photographs, the front facade and lawn read well from the gravel approach, and the walled garden areas are best when borders are in leaf and flower.

Planning

  • Access is limited and pre-planned. The house opens on selected days only, generally 12 noon to 3 pm, with the last tour at 2:30 pm.
  • Check the Hall's own visit information before setting out, since open days vary through the year.
  • Parking is free and easy on arrival, with accessible parking available.
  • Options include house-and-garden and gardens-only entry, plus family and group tours.

More about Tissington Hall

What you see insideThe main hall, dining room and two state drawing rooms
  • The main hall, dining room and two state drawing rooms
  • A library of 3,017 volumes, including nineteenth-century photo albums
  • Fine panelling and old-master paintings throughout the shown rooms
  • Guided tours run every half hour, and some tours are led by Sir Richard FitzHerbert himself

A ten-acre garden and arboretum sits behind the house, with lawns, rose borders, stone walls, steps and mature trees. The approach itself is worth a pause: a gravel drive, broad lawn and a symmetrical stone facade with a central doorway flanked by red-leaved shrubs. There is a gardens-only admission option if you would rather skip the interior.

Honest drawbacksYou see only a selection of rooms, not the whole house.
  • You see only a selection of rooms, not the whole house. Visitors who expect a full circuit are sometimes surprised.
  • The upper floor is not wheelchair accessible, though disabled guests can view the main hall and gardens.
  • The narrow opening pattern means a spontaneous visit will often find the house closed.
  • St Mary's Church opposite, the village pond and wells, and the Tissington Trail are all close by, but they are village attractions rather than Hall facilities, and refreshments in the village are not part of a Hall visit.
