Thor's Cave and the Manifold Valley

Overview

About Thor's Cave

Why stop

  • Dramatic cave mouth and framed Manifold Valley views
  • Distinctive limestone setting with a wider valley walk

Heads up

  • Steep, slippery scramble on uneven rock
  • Crowded at busy times
Thor's Cave is a natural limestone rock formation set high on the steep slopes of the Manifold Valley, between Grindon and Wetton. The huge arched opening is visible from the valley floor and looks genuinely dramatic as you approach, and from the entrance you get a framed view down the Manifold Valley with wooded slopes and pale limestone crags on either side. The cave itself is the destination, and it carries a long human and natural history, with a name linked to Thor, the Norse god of thunder.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

Dry, settled weather makes the path and the rock at the entrance far more manageable, and an early start or a quieter weekday gives you more room at the cave mouth and better light down the valley. Spring and early summer are rewarding for the wider walk, when limestone grassland can show orchids and harebells, wood anemones appear in the woodland, speckled wood butterflies are out in warmer months, and you may hear curlews on the farmland and moorland or spot dippers along the River Manifold. The cave and its access are privately owned rather than managed as a formal attraction, so treat the place, the paths, and the farmland with care.

Getting there

The entrance is reachable on foot only. The two usual approaches are a steep footpath up from the valley bottom off the Manifold cycle track, or a route from west of Wetton village along a concession track and footpath. Both can be muddy in any season. Parking options nearby include the public car park at Wetton village (which also has toilets), Weag's Bridge, the small unsurfaced area where Leek Road from Wetton meets the valley bottom near the Manifold Track, and Wetton Mill, where cafe parking is for customers. There is no vehicle access or parking along Thor's Lane.

More about Thor's Cave

The scramble at the entranceAccess into the main cave mouth is permissive access granted by the landowner, not a right of…

Access into the main cave mouth is permissive access granted by the landowner, not a right of way, and it is a slippery scramble and climb in all conditions. The rock face is polished and slippery, so footing is unpredictable even when dry, and there is a real risk of injury. Stick to the waymarked paths and do not try to enter from other points. Climbing the rocks around the cave, the summit above it, or elsewhere in the valley is not advised.

Honest drawbacksThe terrain is demanding throughout.

The terrain is demanding throughout. Expect a steep pull uphill, uneven and rocky ground, and rock that gets noticeably more slippery when wet. It can get busy at peak times, which makes the scramble at the mouth slower and more awkward. There is no staffed visitor facility in the area, and mobile coverage in the valley is limited, so plan on being self sufficient and tell someone your route.

  • Footwear matters most: sturdy boots or shoes with real grip, suitable for mud and polished stone.
  • Do not rely on your phone for navigation, calls, or assistance in the valley, as mobile coverage is limited.
  • Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a lead, since neighbouring fields and moorland can hold livestock and ground nesting birds. Take any mess home.
  • Picnics are fine, but carry all waste out with you. BBQs and fires are not permitted.
  • Light snacks, ice cream, a cafe and toilets are available at Wetton Mill, though it is worth having a backup plan.
