Safety

The route uses village pavements and short roadside sections before reaching the fields. A small stream and gates on the gravel field section can be wet after rain; keep dogs close around livestock and wildlife.

Hiking Castleton Family Walk

A short, proper walkCastleton Family Walk is a 1.7-mile (2.

Castleton Family Walk is a 1.7-mile (2.7 km) loop from Castleton Visitor Centre, through the village and fields before returning along Hollowford Road. Allow 45 minutes to an hour. It suits families, buggies, dogs and anyone who wants Peak District scenery without a hill day. It is mostly level, but feels like a walk once you leave the village.

Village streets, then open fieldsStart along Cross Street and How Lane, crossing Peakshole Water at Spital Bridge.

Start along Cross Street and How Lane, crossing Peakshole Water at Spital Bridge. The track heads north across gravel and pasture, with Losehill Hall on one side and open fields on the other. Mam Tor comes into view. Robinsland Lane brings a small stream, gates and fields with Winnats Pass, Peveril Castle and limestone hills around you. Return via Hollowford Centre and Hollowford Road. There are no stiles; underfoot is pavement, tarmac and gravel. Spital Bridge recalls a medieval hospital, and Candle House was linked to candles made for local lead miners.

Use the pay-and-display car park at Castleton Visitor Centre, where there are toilets, a café and visitor information. Those facilities are at the start, not in the fields. Dogs are allowed, but keep them close around livestock and wildlife. The awkward bits are road walking and the short roadside stretch before the fields. After rain, the stream crossing and gates can be wet. For a photo, frame Mam Tor or Peveril Castle with the path or dry-stone walls in the foreground.
