Hiking Mam Tor Landslip Miles Without Stiles

The short walkMam Tor Landslip is an out-and-back of about 0.8 miles (1.

Mam Tor Landslip is an out-and-back of about 0.8 miles (1.3 km) round trip, following the abandoned road for roughly 650 m each way from the turning circle to where it drops away. Come for a close look at a buckled road and the Great Ridge beyond it, not a climb to Mam Tor’s summit. The National Park Authority grades it “Access for Some.” The sharp camber and fissures make this rougher than the distance suggests, and a poor fit for pushchairs or anyone needing a smooth, level path.

Start at the turning circle past Treak Cliff Cavern. Keep the Odin Mine entrance on your left and follow the vehicle-restriction sign; pass the gate and climb the former A625 as it tilts across the hillside. The surface is steep, cracked and uneven. Continue 150 m beyond the second gate, then turn back before the road drops away into the landslip. The road was built across the active slide in 1819 and closed to traffic in 1979. The landslide itself is more than 4,000 years old.
