Hiking Castleton, Mam Tor & the Great Ridge Walk

A full ridge walk from CastletonCastleton, Mam Tor & the Great Ridge Walk is a 6.5-mile loop from Castleton's main car park.

Castleton, Mam Tor & the Great Ridge Walk is a 6.5-mile loop from Castleton's main car park. It climbs past Treak Cliff and Blue John caverns to Mam Tor, follows the high ridge over Hollins Cross, Back Tor and Lose Hill Pike, then returns to the village from Spring House Farm. The 6.5 miles includes the direct return to the starting car park; it is not an out-and-back. The official alternative through Hope and beside Peakshole Water is 8 miles, but that extension is not part of this route. Plan about four and a half hours, with around 400 metres of ascent on the sampled elevation profile. This is a half-day hill walk with a sustained climb and repeated rises, not a short summit stroll.

From the car park, the route crosses Castleton past the Castle Inn and Castleton Hall before a lane narrows into a stony path. After crossing the road, the path runs along the hillside toward Treak Cliff Cavern; steps beside it lead to a traverse toward Blue John Cavern. These are show caves beside the walk, not visits included in the route, so allow extra time if you want to go inside. From the Blue John forecourt, the way goes through a gate and climbs through fields, gates and short road crossings to the stepped path for Mam Tor's 517-metre summit. The summit is ringed by the earthwork ditch and rampart of an Iron Age hillfort. Mam Tor means Mother Hill; its Shivering Mountain nickname recalls the large landslide that reshaped this slope.

Follow the Great RidgeFrom Mam Tor, descend the obvious path to Hollins Cross, where several routes meet.

From Mam Tor, descend the obvious path to Hollins Cross, where several routes meet. Keep straight along the ridge, cross a stile and climb the short, steep slope to Back Tor, then continue over the high point of Lose Hill Pike. The ridge gives you views into both Edale and Hope valleys, with Kinder Scout and the Derwent Moors on the northern skyline. The open skyline is the reason to do the full loop: Mam Tor, Back Tor and Lose Hill make a sequence of summits rather than a single viewpoint. At Back Tor, turn to look back toward Mam Tor for a photo that shows the ridge you've crossed. The path is mostly clear, but this is not flat walking; short steep rises, stone steps and stiles repeat across the route. Steeper sections can be slippery after wet weather.

Return, parking and dogsFrom Lose Hill Pike, descend the stone path beside fields and through stiles to Spring House…

From Lose Hill Pike, descend the stone path beside fields and through stiles to Spring House Farm. For the standard 6.5-mile loop, take the direct track and field paths back toward Castleton, joining a stony lane that becomes a surfaced lane into the village. The 8-mile option turns toward Hope instead and uses a riverside path beside Peakshole Water before returning to Castleton. Keep the alternatives separate when planning; the riverside walk adds distance and takes you through Hope, where there are pubs and cafes. Castleton also has places to eat before or after the walk, including the Cheshire Cheese Inn. The named start and finish is Castleton's main car park, not the small Mam Nick car park used by a different 3-mile Mam Tor loop. Dogs may accompany walkers on public rights of way, but keep them under close control around livestock; several fields on this route have gates and stiles.
