A road section below two viaducts has no footway. Peter Dale can flood in winter, parts of Sough Lane become very muddy, and the rough ground above Ible has a deep-rake crossing that requires careful route finding.

Hiking Limestone Way

The Limestone Way is a 46-mile, one-way long-distance route from Castleton to Rocester in Staffordshire, crossing the White Peak through limestone dales, farmland, villages and old lanes. Allow about 18–22 hours of walking, usually split across two to four days. It begins inside the Peak District National Park but continues south beyond its boundary. Because it is point to point, plan overnight stops and transport at both ends before setting out.

From the War Memorial in Castleton, the route climbs Cave Dale on rough limestone, then turns to grass below Peveril Castle and crosses fields, gates and stiles. It alternates among walled tracks, farm paths and road walking. A tree-lined descent leads into Hay Dale and Peter Dale; Peter Dale can flood in winter. The route climbs steeply by Monksdale House before following a narrow walled track. Near Youlgreave, steps and stiles drop into Bradford Dale, whose riverside path follows the River Bradford for about 1.5 km past an old stone slab bridge. Cafes and pubs are available in several villages, but stops are intermittent rather than continuous trail services.

Robin Hood’s Stride and the southThe way passes between Robin Hood’s Stride, nicknamed the Mock Castle, and Cratcliffe Rocks.

The way passes between Robin Hood’s Stride, nicknamed the Mock Castle, and Cratcliffe Rocks. From the top, frame Robin Hood’s Stride with the small prehistoric stone circle in the field below. Elsewhere, it follows holloways and passes old lead workings such as Beans and Bacon Mine; expect open grazing land and stone walls as much as dramatic outcrops. The route continues through Parwich and the Tissington area, crosses the Tissington Trail, then descends to the Dove at Coldwall Bridge before going on to Mill Street in Rocester.

Effort and accessThis is a demanding multi-day walk with many stiles and varied footing.

This is a demanding multi-day walk with many stiles and varied footing. A section below two viaducts has no footway, while parts of Sough Lane can turn very muddy in winter. Above Ible, rough pitted ground leads to a deep-rake crossing that takes care to locate. The way is marked with a ram’s-head symbol and is described as dog friendly. Begin by the War Memorial in Castleton centre; trail-specific parking details and dedicated facilities at the start were not verified, so arrange village parking and supplies separately.
