Best time to go
Since the temperature underground barely changes, season matters less than timing. Weekdays and quieter off-season periods tend to feel more relaxed and personal for a self-guided visit, so go then if you can.

Working Blue John mine, self-guided caves, and Hope Valley views
Overview
This is the home of Blue John stone, a colour-banded form of fluorspar found nowhere else in the world, and one of only two working Blue John mines anywhere. Mining here began around 1745 to 1750, the caves opened to visitors in 1935, and the same family tradition of Blue John mining and craft goes back over 300 years. It is a proper sight rather than a quick roadside cave: you go underground into a mine that is still worked, then come back out to a wide view over Castleton and the Hope Valley.

Guide
The visit is self-guided with an audio guide on your own phone and takes about 45 minutes, so you set your own pace and linger where you want. Along the way you pass:
The visitor centre is free to enter and has a permanent museum of Blue John, geological samples and mine history, plus a gift shop, workshop, cafe hatch and picnic areas. There is free parking, and the site sits on walking routes, so plenty of people walk up from Castleton rather than drive. Dogs on leads are welcome in the visitor area and in the cavern.
Underground it stays a constant 10C (50F) year round and the floor is naturally wet, so bring warm layers and wear sensible non-slip shoes. Give yourself time beyond the 45 minutes for the museum, the shop and the view. Staff are generally friendly and knowledgeable if you want to ask about the stone or the workings.
The attraction sits on a steep, exposed hillside, and the climb up to the visitor centre is a real pull. There are steps and steep slopes both above and below ground, and the cavern is not suitable for wheelchairs. Walking-disabled visitors can contact the site in advance for advice. Footing is cool and damp throughout, which catches out anyone in smooth-soled shoes. Crowding varies from day to day.
